About the role

Part-time Library Assistant at Lincoln College, Oxford: 0.5 FTE, 18.75 hours/week, two-year fixed term, covering while the Deputy Librarian catalogues the College's Early Printed Books. Reporting to the Deputy Librarian, duties span circulation in the Alma Fulfilment module (check-in and renewals), holds-shelf processing, shelving and re-shelving, periodicals check-in, processing new books (stamping, labelling, security tagging, protective covering), routine book repairs and book cleaning projects. Front-of-house work includes invigilating the Library, helping readers use SOLO, email enquiries, CCTV alarm monitoring and twice-daily reader counts. Also supervising external researchers, deputising for the Deputy Librarian and minute-taking at the Termly Historic Collections Committee. Requires good IT skills, accuracy and attention to detail, and ability to lift heavy books; library or customer-service experience an advantage, with comprehensive training provided. Salary £13,767–£14,218.50 p.a. (NSP 14–16, 50% of £27,534–£28,437). Closing date 14 September.

What you’ll do

  • Checking in and renewing loans using the Alma Fulfilment module; processing books for the holds shelf
  • Shelving, re-shelving and keeping desks clear of books, belongings, cushions and Library stationery
  • Periodicals: checking-in new arrivals, stamping and shelving
  • Processing new books: stamping, labelling, adding security tags and covering with protective wrappings
  • Carrying out routine book repairs and book cleaning projects
  • Monitoring reported alarms from the CCTV and communicating with Library users as necessary
  • Invigilating the Library, helping readers find materials and use the SOLO catalogue, and answering straightforward email enquiries
  • Undertaking reader counts at 11am and 3pm daily
  • Assisting in maintaining the quiet working atmosphere of the Library, security and discipline
  • Assisting in maintaining the fabric, plant and equipment of the Library, liaising with College staff and supervising external contractors
  • Supervising external researchers using Lincoln College Library materials and deputising for the Deputy Librarian when necessary
  • Minute-taking at Termly Historic Collections Committee meetings; collecting post from the Lodge and water and milk supplies from the Servery

What they’re looking for

Good IT skills, ability to work accurately with attention to detail, and ability to lift and put away heavy books required. Experience in a library or customer service environment advantageous but not essential as comprehensive training will be provided. This role would particularly suit someone undertaking professional qualification in Librarianship or Information Science part-time or by distance learning.
